"Kirchberg an der Jagst, Germany: view of the river Jagst with the listed stone-arch bridge, the buildings at the southern bank and the hill which supports Kirchberg Castle (top) and the old town. At the far left the Stadtturm.The town’s origins can be traced back to its exposed location at a ford across the river, which was on the important road connecting the free imperial cities of Schwäbisch Hall and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Around 1240 a castle was built on the hill (and later the palace in its place) to guard this ford, and the stone bridge was erected in 1779 beside the ford. This photo therefore highlights the bridge from the riverbank and emphasizes the favourable location of the castle hill."
